Education Department takes stern steps for corporal punishment educators

The Mpumalanga Department of Education has taken stern steps on two educators and a principal following allegations corporal punishment to learners.

The Department said they have placed the principal and an educator of Masizakhe Secondary School in Breyten in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality on precautionary suspension.

“These two suspended educators are amongst the three who were arrested by the South African Police Services on Tuesday after allegations of corporal punishment at the school were brought to the attention of the police and subsequently the Department”.

The third educator involved in this alleged misconduct is appointed by the School Governing Body as such the Department will convene a meeting with the SGB to advise them about the course of action to be undertaken, said the department in a statement.

The duo has been charged with misconduct and will have to explain their actions before a Departmental Disciplinary Hearing.

The Department expressed that it will continue to render counseling to learners affected by the alleged misconduct.
