Reward for Missing Aserie Sibusiso Ndlovu and Partner Doubled to R100K

Johannesburg – The reward for information leading to the safe return of missing journalist Aserie Sibusiso Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, has been increased to R100,000. This follows mounting pressure on authorities and growing concern from both the media industry and the couple’s families.

Circumstances Leading to Their Disappearance

Ndlovu and Mdhluli vanished without a trace on February 18, 2025, marking over two and a half months of uncertainty. On the day they went missing, Ndlovu was last seen leaving his workplace at Denlyn Mall in Mamelodi around 6 PM. Mdhluli, meanwhile, was last seen at their home in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, later that evening.

Their sudden disappearance raised alarms when neither could be reached on their mobile phones. The situation escalated when a relative, after repeated failed attempts to contact the couple, reported them missing to local police.

Who Are Aserie Ndlovu and Zodwa Mdhluli?

Aserie Sibusiso Ndlovu is a respected community journalist and the founder of Capital Live SA 99.0 FM, a Mamelodi-based community radio station. He also serves as an executive member of the National Press Club, contributing to public discourse on community development and governance.

Zodwa Precious Mdhluli, Ndlovu’s partner, lived with him in KwaMhlanga. The couple were well-known in both communities, regularly involved in social projects and local advocacy efforts.

What Went Missing Along With Them?

At the time of their disappearance, several personal belongings were unaccounted for, including their white Volkswagen Citi Golf, registered as MB99MF GP. Their mobile phones have remained off since that evening, and according to investigators, Ndlovu’s bank account has shown no activity, eliminating the possibility of a voluntary disappearance.

The couple’s home was found ransacked, intensifying fears that they may have been forcibly taken.

Was There a Known Threat to Their Safety?

In recent months, concerns over Ndlovu’s safety had surfaced. The family disclosed that in October 2024, Ndlovu was approached by a local extortion gang operating in Mamelodi — allegedly linked to the feared Boko Haram gang. They demanded protection fees for operating at Denlyn Mall, which Ndlovu firmly refused to pay.

This incident, once brushed off as intimidation, is now being treated as a significant lead in the investigation.

Was Ndlovu Investigating a Dangerous Story?

Despite speculation, there’s no concrete evidence suggesting that Ndlovu was working on a story that might have directly endangered his life at the time of his disappearance. His most recent published article on Capital Live SA’s website covered the controversial figure James Neo Tshoaeli, known by his street name “Tiger.”

Tshoaeli is an alleged illegal mining ringleader who made headlines after escaping police custody in January 2025. He had been implicated in several violent crimes, including torture and control over illicit mining operations in Stilfontein. While Ndlovu’s article didn’t reveal any new information beyond what mainstream outlets reported, the timing and topic have raised questions among his colleagues.

Public Outcry and Search Efforts

The disappearance of Ndlovu and Mdhluli has sent shockwaves through the South African media community. In response, the African Media and Communicators Forum, along with the National Press Club, initially offered a R50,000 reward, which has now doubled to R100,000.

Veteran forensic investigator Calvin Rafadi has been brought in to assist the police in unraveling the mystery behind their disappearance. The couple’s families, meanwhile, have made emotional appeals for information from the public.

Ongoing Investigation and Police Involvement

Despite ongoing efforts, police have yet to make a breakthrough in the case. Pressure is mounting on Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to personally intervene and prioritise the investigation, amid criticism over delays and the lack of visible progress.

Anyone with credible information about the whereabouts of Ndlovu and Mdhluli is urged to contact authorities immediately. The hope remains that the increased reward will motivate potential witnesses to come forward.
